Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War - everything we know about the game

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

After months of leaks, Activision has finally lifted the textbook iron curtain over the next game in its hit Call of Duty series. Meet Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War. Here's everything we know about this game.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be released on November 13, 2020. The game will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Smart delivery is a program that allows players who have purchased a game for the current generation console to receive a free upgrade to the version for the next-generation platforms as soon as they become available.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be backward compatible on both next-gen systems, but will have to pay a nominal $ 10 price tag to purchase the game on next-gen consoles. In short, there is no Smart delivery, just a discount on the purchase of the game.

You see the trailer for the game above. He introduces us to her heroes - for example, Sergeant Woods will return. In addition, we are shown a quick overview of the period of action - 1981 - and news about a Soviet agent codenamed "Perseus". And then comes the usual cutting of all the tense gameplay moments of the upcoming Call of Duty.

What is Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War?

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a 2020 Call of Duty game. It is the next game in the franchise after 2019 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, continuing the Black Ops sub-series, whose last game was 2018 Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

In addition to the single-player campaign, revealing various episodes of the Cold War, the game will feature multiplayer and cooperative zombie mode, a popular feature of the Black Ops series. In addition, the game will work in conjunction with Warzone, the popular Battle Royale mode released by Activision in late March.

Black Ops Cold War takes place in 1981, at the height of the aggravation of relations between the United States and the Soviet Union. The player must hunt down the Soviet spy "Perseus", a man who, according to the CIA, was able to successfully infiltrate the American government during the Cold War. Story missions will take place at different historical moments, sending the player to different places, for example, Laos or Ukraine.

Black Ops Cold War reappears with characters associated with the Black Ops series, including Alex Woods, Frank Mason, and Jason Hudson. They all first appeared in Black Ops in 2010. The storyline for Black Ops Cold War will again feature David S. Goyer, who wrote films such as The Dark Knight and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, as well as the first two Black Ops games.

A highlight of the Black Ops Cold War campaign is that for the first time in the history of the Call of Duty series, a player will be able to create their own character. According to the Washington Post, Black Ops Cold War will offer a choice of gender - male, female, or "classified" for non-binary players or those wishing to maintain a spy atmosphere.

If we talk about the time of action, then one of the characters in Black Ops Cold War will be President Ronald Reagan, who is said to personally give the player at least one task during the game's plot. In an election year for the US president, a realistic digital copy of Reagan, idolized by modern Republicans and demonized by everyone else, will undoubtedly be a source of heated debate.

When asked about the inclusion of Reagan in the game from the Washington Post, representatives of Activision simply replied that they studied the archives of speeches and spoke with former members of the government who knew Reagan personally.

In addition, a new potential villain was introduced: Russell Adler referred to by Treyarch as the "American Monster". He is strikingly similar to actor Robert Redford, who’s starring roles in films such as 1975's Three Days of the Condor and 1976's all the President's Men defined the Cold War era.

The main developer of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War remains Treyarch, the creator of the entire Black Ops series.

Sledgehammer Games, developer of Call of Duty: WWII, and Raven Software, creators of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered, also contributed initially, according to Kotaku. But "disagreements" between the studios led to Treyarch becoming the main developer, with the roles of Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software being reduced to serving as support studios for the campaign mode.

Reboot or not?

According to IGN, the Black Ops Cold War is a "direct sequel" to the first Black Ops of 2010. And if Modern Warfare 2019 completely rebooted the original Modern Warfare trilogy, then Black Ops Cold War returns to neo-horror, ignoring certain parts and continuing the story of the original.

As for the time of action, it is located between Black Ops and Black Ops II memories. Most likely, it will still be a kind of "soft" reboot, allowing new players to get started more easily.

The Eurogamer article revealing the title Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War describes the game as "a return to basics with a historical setting" and "a situation similar to Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare, which received a soft restart after several sequels."

Plot and gameplay

In the video for The Gaming Revolution, the game takes place during the Vietnam War and presents the conflict from the perspective of American, South Vietnamese, and Viet Cong soldiers.

One of the main tasks is to find a Soviet spy, codenamed "Perseus", who threatens the entire US people. He is believed to have direct access to weapons of mass destruction and other dangerous weapons. It is Sergeant Woods and his comrades who must stop Perseus.

In the previews of IGN and Washington Post, the first mission of the company was presented - the educational level in Ukraine. The player is trapped in a replica of an American suburb, and the training mission ends in a real gunfight to the 1980s hit "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar. The Washington Post called it "the first demonstration of the campaign."

Plus, it's clearly seen that Black Ops Cold War will ditch the sci-fi elements for which the Black Ops series has become famous. No mechs, androids, armored enhancements. Everything is very harsh and down to earth. If you are disappointed that Call of Duty has gone fiction for several years, then you will surely find consolation in the fact that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will once again return to gameplay that stands firmly on the ground.

Various endings

Multiple endings have been confirmed. Players will have tons of opportunities to make different choices. You can play as your own characters by choosing your appearance and gender.
